What is CBG? What are its effects? And which conditions may it improve?

CBG isn’t just one of the many biologically active compounds in the hemp or marijuana plant, but is often referred to as “The Mother of all Cannabinoids.” This is because, CBDA, THCA and CBCA all come from CBGA. Once these naturally occuring acids are heated up  (decarboxylated) they either become CBD, THC or CBC respectively.  Perhaps this is why CBG is so versatile and shares many of the benefits of THC, CBD and CBC without providing any high effect.

Below is a list of just some of CBG’s effects and health benefits.

     1. CBG increases GABA, the chemical in our nervous system that slows things             down.  GABA Decreases Anxiety and Improves sleep.

  • CBG decreases inflammation and pain. Reduces the overactive immune cells that attack joints and skin as in Rheumatoid arthritis and Psoriasis. Such cells include, T cells, macrophages, interleukins, etc  This can cut down on the need for immunosuppressant medications.
  •

  • CBG is Neuroprotective. It decreases inflammation and free radicals throughout the body including the nervous system. Reducing oxidative stress helps prevent the destruction of nerve cells involved in movement (e.g. Parkinsons), sensation (e.g. Neuropathy) and thinking (e.g. Alzheimers) thus being neuroprotective.  This protection can help prevent neuropathy due to nerve damage from chemotherapy.
  •

       4. CBG decreases the overactive immune cells destroying GI lining and ulcer                 formation, in Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.  ( I use this in my patients who in general have “a sensitive stomach”).

      5. CBG via GABA decreases muscle spasms/spastic colon/IBS/

    Urgency bladder incontinence

       6. CBG via GABA reduces blood pressure (Hypertension) by relaxing arterial walls

      7.  CBG via GABA reduces eye pressure (Glaucoma) and increases angle drainage from the eye.  Avoid CBD if you have glaucoma-may increase intraocular pressure.

     8.  CBG Inhibits TRP m8- By this action it help prevents proliferation of tumor cells.

     9.  Can stimulate appetite  (may be helpful during chemotherapy)

    10. Reduce nausea/vomiting (may be helpful during chemotherapy)
